Welcome to I SPY MY EVIL EYE.
Here you will find an edit of handpicked unique evil-eye pieces from jewellery to homeware.
My obsession with the ‘μάτι' (mati), ‘eye’, started from a young age largely influenced by the superstitious passions of my Yiayia (Greek grandmother). My first ever piece of jewellery was my christening necklace adorned with a cross and of course, an evil eye.
The evil eye is a curse believed to be caused by a malevolent glare, originating in Greece as far back as the 6th century BC, when it commonly appeared on drinking vessels. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury, so talismans were created to protect against the evil eye. It is a belief that you can catch the “matiasma”, from someone’s jealous compliment, or negative energy which can cause sudden illness or misfortune.
The evil eye can sometimes be cast away through the process of xematiasma (ξεμάτιασμα), whereby the ‘healer’ silently recites a secret prayer passed over from an older relative, usually a grandparent. These prayers are rarely revealed to others in case the healer loses their ability to cast off the evil eye.
Another way to ward off the evil spirits is to wear a talisman or good luck charm. These talismans can take any form but usually consist of an ornamental eye inside a blue circle, which people wear or hang about their house.
I’ve been collecting these talismans for years and have finally launched my own piece of evil eye heaven to share with you. Each piece has been inspired by the classic Mediterranean design and individually chosen to bring you the best of the eyes.
I really hope you like all the pieces as much as I do :)
Stay protected everyone and thank you for visiting!
